Tenwek is a 300 bed Christian mission hospital that serves a population of about 800,000 in Southwest Kenya. It serves as a surgery referral center for the entire region of more than 8.5 million people. The hospital started as a small clinic in the 1930′s and the first doctor came in 1959. It has five modern operating theatres in a new surgical and cational facility plus additional Ob/Gyn, Ophthalamology and Endoscopy theatres, where more than 5,000 surgeries are performed each year. Tenwek has an extensive medical library with internet services, laparoscopy, endoscopy, research in esophageal cancer and other areas, diagnostic radiology, laboratory, cytopathology and physical therapy services.Tenwek’s surgical faculty consists of American and African board certified general surgeons along with many international visiting general surgeons and specialists each year.
